Hi friend! I'd like to share a little bit about me and why I am so excited to share Beautiful Dreamer with you!
I was born the oldest of six children. My parents were part of a cult. My father had a position of authority and esteem in the cult. His position afforded him the opportunity to create the public image of a spiritual leader but behind closed doors, it was another story.
My childhood was filled with brutal acts of violence as well as extreme emotional and psychological abuse. We were also incredibly poor. It was the kind of poverty that gets inside you and makes you believe it is who you are. The kind of poverty that breeds shame and isolation.
At the age of 17 I was admitted to college. I was so excited for my future, believing this was my escape from the life I had known at home. However, it did not turn out to be the safe haven I had hoped for. My first year in college I was kidnapped and raped by a man I had never met before. My rapist was never caught. That event sent my life spinning for a very long time. It also became the foundation for the work I do now in violent crimes investigations.
After the rape, I dropped out of college. I met and married a man I deeply loved. We had five children together. He would later walk out and abandon the entire family. In addition to the emotional and psychological trauma, the financial ramifications of his abandonment were devastating. We lost our home and for a short period of time we lived in a hotel.
Fast forward to present day—I am now Dr. Virginia Braden, a licensed investigator specializing in violent crimes, a behavioral profiler, certified hostage negotiator, author, and part time professor at the University of Louisville. I have a thriving business and work that gives my life great purpose and meaning. All five of my children are now grown and are beautiful human beings making their contributions to the world in ways that bring them great joy.
